Last night I noticed a TV advert on RTE ONE for Supervalu/Centra. They advertised a Semillion/Chardonnay, Yeah, they actually printed and then read the grape as Semillion. Listen to the voice over. It's a real laugh.
It's not too long since we had Merlott's in the market place. Then we got sophisticated and remembered it rhymed with Marilyn and dropped the final t's.
When the good folk at Fetzer launched their Gewurztraminer they produced billboards that said, 'Just say Gevurz'. They had it right. Who cares what it sounds like. What does it taste like? Will it sell?
So does it matter if we say Merlott; is Reesling or Riceling a real faux pas or just different ways of saying the same thing?
Semillion in print though! Now that's a real laugh. Anyone for Peeno this weekend?
