Portuguese Wine Fair This Month

There will be a Portuguese Wine Fair in Dublin on Monday the 26th of this month. It will be held at the Radisson Blu Ruyal Hotel on Golden Lane. The consumer part of this has a €15.00 entry and will run from 6.30 to 8.30pm

For a number of reasons this is good news:
  • Portuguese Wines should be better known - they are exciting, interesting and different.

  • Portugal hasn't a penny to rub these days and yet its producers are still prepared to support a trade fair in Ireland. We should reciprocate and support them in return.

  • Countries, such as Portugal, that have something unique to offer have the potential for a great future. It's up to us to make it happen.

  • To its credit Portugal is always asking us how it should market itself in Ireland. Well, this is a good part of the mix and I hope it goes well.

The Press Release mentions the following:
Portugal's main strengths are the diversity of its wine regions and its wealth of native grape varieties. In recent years wines from Portugal have become much sought after. Still wines from regions such as the Douro or Alentejo have been creating waves in the wine world and the recognition for both the quality and new wine styles has been encouraging. Wine enthusiasts everywhere want to explore and learn more about Portugal’s wines.

Here in Ireland Portuguese wines are also starting to make an impact. Recent figures show that Portugal has significantly increased its market share in the independent specialist off trade sector with sales to March 2011 showing a value increase of +36.9%. Volume sales in this sector also increased during the same period by +6.0% reflecting the growing interest in Ireland for the unique style of wine that Portugal has to offer.

There are currently 28 Irish importing companies distributing Portuguese wines in Ireland and many of these will be shown at the 2011 trade show. As well as the wines which are already available here, some of Portuguese producers will be travelling to Dublin with a view to finding a distributor.

The consumer tickets for the event which will run from 06:30 - 08:30 p.m. will be on sale from Monday 26th October 2011 priced €15.00 and must be purchased in advance. Application forms will be available from a number of independent off licences in the greater Dublin area or directly from Jean Smullen.
